  1. What is Copper Siding?

Copper siding involves the application of copper sheets or panels to the exterior walls of buildings. It offers a visually appealing and durable solution that enhances the overall aesthetics while providing protection from external elements. Copper  has been utilized for centuries and continues to be a popular choice due to its inherent qualities and long-lasting nature.

  1. The Benefits of Copper

2.1 Durability and Longevity

Copper  is renowned for its exceptional durability, making it a long-term investment for both commercial and residential properties. Copper is highly resistant to corrosion, making it impervious to the effects of moisture, UV rays, and extreme weather conditions. Unlike other siding materials, copper does not rot, warp, or crack over time, ensuring that the building remains protected and visually appealing for years to come.

2.2 Low Maintenance

One of the significant advantages of copper  is its low maintenance requirements. Unlike wood or vinyl siding, copper does not require frequent painting or staining. Over time, copper develops a natural patina that acts as a protective layer, enhancing its appearance while reducing the need for maintenance. Periodic cleaning is all that is typically required to keep copper siding looking its best.

2.3 Distinctive Aesthetic Appeal

Copper  adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any building. Its warm, rich tones and distinctive patina make it stand out from other siding materials. Whether used in residential or commercial applications, copper never fails to impress. .

3.1 Surface Preparation

Before installing copper, it is crucial to prepare the surface properly. This involves cleaning the substrate, ensuring it is dry and free from any debris or contaminants. Additionally, a moisture barrier may be applied to prevent water penetration and enhance the overall durability of the siding.

3.2 Copper Siding Panels

Copper  panels are available in various sizes and thicknesses. It is essential to carefully measure and cut the panels to fit the specific dimensions of the building. Leaving an expansion gap is vital to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction of the copper panels, ensuring a secure and long-lasting installation.

3.3 Joining and Fastening

To ensure a weather-tight installation, copper  panels are joined together using interlocking seams or standing seams. This prevents water infiltration and enhances the overall durability of the siding. Copper nails or screws are typically used as fasteners to secure the panels to the building substrate.

3.4 Finishing Touches

After the copper  panels are installed, finishing touches are added to complete the look. These may include decorative moldings, trim, or corner pieces made from copper or other complementary materials. These finishing elements not only enhance the overall aesthetics but also provide additional protection and a polished appearance.

This siding does not require painting or staining. Over time, it develops a natural patina that enhances its appearance and acts as a protective layer. However, if desired, copper siding can be painted with special copper-compatible paints.

The patina development process can take several years, but it depends on environmental factors such as humidity and exposure to air. However, the process can be accelerated using patina solutions.

Copper is a naturally occurring metal that can be sustainably sourced through mining. Additionally, its long lifespan and recyclability contribute to its environmental sustainability.

While simple installations may be possible for DIY enthusiasts, it is generally recommended to hire professionals for copper installations, especially for complex projects. Professional expertise ensures proper installation and maximizes the longevity of the siding.

Copper Composite Material (CCM) is created by sandwiching two thin layers of copper around a fire-retardant (FR) core. It is also available as a custom order with a polyethylene (PE) core, subject to minimum quantity requirements. The genuine surface of copper will weather over time, developing a classic patina green based on the micro-environment of the project location. A green patina can also be achieved through a chemical treatment of the copper composite before installation, performed by a third party to the architect’s satisfaction.
